💥 6 Reliable Brainstorming Techniques - Brainwriting 💥
Sep 08, 2022#3 Brainwriting
How does brainwriting work? 🤔
Brainwriting is a method for fostering creativity that is similar to many brainstorming techniques. It's a method that works well with both big groups and groups that don't always have to get together.
👉 Its strength is that participants receive a problem statement, either in person or by email, allowing them to consider it whenever and wherever they like.
This gives each person the chance to record their own thoughts and/or remarks, which they can then share with other participants as needed.
The remaining participants might then contribute their own additional ideas or provide helpful suggestions to the ones already presented. This idea- and thought-transferring can happen repeatedly. Paper and pens are all that are need.
The method of brainwriting is quick and simple, and it can have anywhere between 5 and 300 participants.
6-3-5 method 💡
Brainwriting, which allows for the rapid generation of many ideas, is also known as the 6-3-5 method. The 6-3-5 Brainwriting technique is based on the practice of having 6 people write down three ideas on a huge piece of paper, one for each of them.
The participant sitting next to them receives this paper and adds three more thoughts to it. In less than an hour, this is repeated five times, yielding six times eighteen ideas. This procedure can also be used in different circumstances, such as 4-3-2.
Making a note 📝
The goal of brainwriting is to get participants to write down as many ideas as they can. There are a variety of techniques that can be applied because this is not always simple.
One of these is using block letters on the page so that everyone can read what is written on it. Shorter words should be preferred (one-line sentences). Individual words shouldn't be used because their meanings can vary depending on the circumstance.
Additionally, descriptions must be specific and refrain from using words like "better," "greater," or "bigger." It's crucial to express ideas positively and to stay away from negative terms like "not" and "no."
Finally, remember that silence is golden. Only in a calm setting will the participants be able to maintain their concentration and generate useful ideas.
Working technique ✔️
Selecting a practical working method is advised when using Brainwriting. First and foremost, a facilitator is required. This person serves as the session's chair.
The issue statement is written down on each piece of paper, each candidate is given a pen and a brief instruction, and the timer is kept running. Everyone can record their thoughts in the various boxes that can be created on the A4-sized paper.
It is advisable to choose a thicker paper because it resists tearing easily. Following that, the work might be done in stages:
✔️ The countdown begins, and each person has five minutes to jot down one to three suggestions.
✔️ All forms are given to the person next to them after the allotted five minutes.
✔️ The second round begins, and each person has an additional five minutes to list one to three suggestions beneath those of their neighbour. Everyone is free to draw inspiration from the preceding concepts.
✔️ After five minutes, there is a third round. Up until everyone has taken a turn, this will continue. Additionally, a maximum number of people may fill up the page of paper.
✔️ Everyone chooses the best concepts from the paper in the final round. The group then forms a circle around these concepts.
✔️ The circled concepts are presented to the group. The participants will have a chance to justify their positions, and those with insufficient support will be marked out.
✔️ The facilitator then gathers all of the pieces of paper with suggestions circled.
✔️ In order to provide a comprehensive summary of the greatest ideas, the facilitator types up all of the ideas that have been circled and delivers them to every participant.
Clustering throughout the Brainwriting process 📅
After the final phase, it is advisable to set up a meeting to discuss all of the ideas that have been grouped together. Then, brainwriting switches from being a quantitative to a qualitative process, with just the finest ideas being selected.
Based on this, the participants will create a step-by-step strategy to attempt to address the problem statement that was previously recognized. There is a strong basis of support among the participants since each member makes a contribution to the problem-solving process.
The benefits of brainwriting 🏆
Brainwriting offers a variety of benefits. First of all, it gives opportunities for more introverted people to be heard as well as those who are more outgoing to express themselves.
There are no dominant participants since the participants work in silence, and everyone gets an equal amount of time to consider the issue statement. The chairperson's job is to keep everyone silent and to speak out as soon as someone starts talking or mumbling.
👉 The best aspect of Brainwriting is the synergy it fosters; by reading the thoughts that other participants have written down at the top of the paper, each person is inspired to think of their own innovative ideas. A new concept or an extension of an existing idea can be derived from each idea.
Having forms that can be submitted through email makes remote working possible, which is a welcome side effect. But in order to make the best use of everyone's knowledge and creativity, the facilitator needs to be strict and make sure that everything is well organized.
